Lynn Hudson

Music Director

Lynn is a graduate of Leeds University, where she was awarded the Frank Toothill Memorial Prize for Music. She has worked extensively in education, teaching in schools in Leeds and Calderdale, serving as Chair of Examiners for Music at Advanced Level for a major examining board and running the secondary music PGCE course at the University of Leeds.

Throughout her career she has always been involved in choral work, forming the City of Leeds Youth Choir, taking Opus 44, a female voice chamber choir, to considerable success in national competitions, directing Halifax Young Singers for 27 years, and leading Calderdale Singing Initiative (CSI:Halifax), a choir formed to encourage adults back into singing. She has run choral courses for both singers and conductors, and adjudicated at music festivals in Yorkshire and the wider area.

With her husband, Thom Meredith, she is a Director of Harrogate Festival Choral Course. Their son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Ellie, are also professional musicians.

In her own words …

At the age of 8, I was selected to conduct my junior school percussion band. Whether I was chosen because a teacher saw a spark of talent in me or just a girl that liked to be in control, I don’t know but, either way, I was hooked. I’ve always loved singing and believe that everyone should be given that opportunity without fear of an audition process and without feeling that they have to be able to read music: that just comes with practice. The joy that singing together engenders is infectious and if we have fun and rise to new challenges along the way so much the better.

I worked with Craig for 20 years at Halifax Young Singers.  Ned sang with us from the age of 9 until he went to university. On his return he and his dad sang with CSI:Halifax and subsequently Ned became our accompanist and, latterly, my deputy. I’ll leave them to tell their own stories but I know we make a good team and that we’re excited about what lies ahead for CCC (Halifax).

Craig Cockerill

Accompanist

Craig was born and bred in Halifax, studying Music at Dartington College of Arts in Devon. He trained as a teacher at the University of Leeds and is presently team leader for Music at Allerton High School in North Leeds.

He has been involved in choirs from an early age and, after completing his studies, held the post of Director of Music at Christ Church, Mount Pellon, Halifax, and served as accompanist for Halifax Young Singers for 20 years. He has taught piano both privately and in many of Calderdale’s schools, been Music Director for pantomimes in Halifax and Leeds, and accompanied soloists for recitals and examinations.

Craig currently holds the post of Organist and Choir Director at Holy Trinity, Meanwood, Leeds.

In his own words …

Over recent months I’ve deputised for Ned on a number of occasions and got to experience, at first hand, what a great group of singers make up this choir. I taught Ned piano many years ago and obviously remember him from HYS when I was working with Lynn, so knew rehearsals would be fun, focused and friendly. Helping individual singers realise their potential within a relaxed and supportive environment is what it’s all about so I’m delighted to become a permanent part of the team.

Ned Smith

Deputy Conductor and Accompanist

Ned was also born and brought up in Halifax. He studied Law and French at the University of Bristol and works as a solicitor in Leeds.

He started singing at the age of 4 and by the time he was 11, sang in 6 choirs. He also began performing in youth opera choruses and musicals with local amateur groups which he still continues to do, appearing regularly in shows in Halifax and Huddersfield. He was Music Director with Halifax Light Opera Society Juniors for 3 years and has since co-directed Halifax Minster Choir and vocal ensemble Out of the Box.

Ned joined CSI:Halifax as its accompanist in 2017 and more recently assumed the role of deputy conductor.

In his own words …

Singing has such positive effects and has given me so many opportunities: to meet new people and see new places. It can be transformative as well as a lot of fun. There is nothing like working together with a group of people to produce a performance which brings enjoyment to an audience. That shared sense of achievement is really important and I believe it should be available to everyone. It is something this choir does really well and I’m proud to play a small part in that.
